The Joy of Christmas at the National Cathedral

This year, the National Cathedral celebrates the 36th annual Joy of Christmas choral concert. I attended the family oriented version on December 15th and was delighted with the love infused, holiday spirit all around me. The songs chosen were traditional Christmas tunes from all over the world. The cathedral will hold additional concerts on December 16th.Image

The Cathedral, as always, is stunning. An 83-year project, beginning with the corner stone laid by Teddy Roosevelt in 1907, it is one of the largest cathedrals in the world.

If you visit, plan to see other points of interest including the crypt of Helen Keller and her teacher Annie Sullivan, tomb of Woodrow Wilson, stained glass window that is completely dedicated to space (moon rock and all), Darwin monkeys, and the Darth Vader gargoyle. That’s right, you heard me correctly.

Unfortunately, one of the towers is still under construction with nearly 20 million dollars worth of damage from the 2011 earthquake but this should not deter your interest; the National Cathedral is a real gem and will fascinate visitors of all faiths. ImageImageImage
